Why You Should Vote No on I-901

Whatever happened to civil liberties? Why is it that the same political wing of Americans which is calling for the legalization of marijuana wants to ban tobacco?

I-901, the initiative to ban smoking in any buildings open to the public and places of employment, does a disservice to every bar- and restaurant-owner in the state. They want to be able to make business decisions for themselves, and I can hardly blame them. With so many tribal casinos which would not be affected by I-901, it is unfair to ask these people to give up a large segment of their paying customers.

I don’t smoke. That’s a personal choice I made for myself a long time ago. My grandmother was a heavy smoker, and died of lung cancer when I was very young. But that’s just it, folks. It’s a personal choice. If you don’t like smoke, secondhand or otherwise, don’t put yourself near it. There are plenty of businesses that don’t allow it, and it’s up to you whether or not you choose to frequent the ones that do.

We don’t need laws like this. They are unnecessary, harmful to business, and detrimental to our own freedom to choose. There are personal decisions we have to make in life, but there are no personal decisions we have to make for everyone else.

  • amen to that... i heard on the radio that 80% of americans are non-smokers, and 80% of restaurants, bars, and taverns are non-smoking. seems to be pretty even to me. i was thinking about creating an initiative to ban cats from within the city, as some people are allergic to cats and that is therefore a health hazard. probably wouldn't pass, but i would argue that it is equally ridiculous.
